North Temperate Lakes LTER: Ice Duration - Madison Lakes Area 1853 - current

Abstract
Data include dates of freeze-up, thaw, and ice duration of three primary lakes in the Madison area (Lake Mendota, Lake Monona, and Lake Wingra). Data are obtained from the State Climatologist. For Monona and Wingra, the freeze date (ice on) is defined as the first date on which the water body is observed to be completely ice covered, and the breakup date (ice off) is the date of the last breakup observed before the open water phase. Ice duration is the number of days that a water body is completely covered with ice and excludes any period during which the lake thawed in mid-winter before freezing again. For Mendota, duration is calculated in the same manner, but ice on and ice off dates are assigned as follows: The lake is deemed frozen if it has solid ice from Picnic Point to Maple Bluff and total ice cover is greater than 50 %. The lake is deemed open if it is ice-free from Picnic Point to Maple Bluff and total ice cover is less than 50%. Sampling Frequency: annually. Number of sites: 3.

North Temperate Lakes LTER: Secchi Disk Depth; Other Auxiliary Base Crew Sample Data 1981 - current

Abstract
Secchi disk depth is measured in the deepest part of each lake for the eleven primary lakes (Allequash, Big Muskellunge, Crystal, Sparkling, Trout lakes, unnamed lakes 27-02 [Crystal Bog] and 12-15 [Trout Bog], Fish, Mendota, Monona and Wingra). The disk is circular, 20 cm in diameter, and has alternating black and white quadrants. It is lowered using a calibrated Kevlar rope to minimize stretching. Readings are made on the shaded side of the boat both with and without the aid of a plexiglass viewer. The points at which the disk disappears while being lowered and reappears while being raised are averaged to determine Secchi depth. Auxiliary data include time of day, air temperature, cloud cover, wave height, wind speed and direction and whether the lake was ice covered on the sampledate. Sampling Frequency: fortnightly during ice-free season - every 6 weeks during ice-covered season for the northern lakes. The southern lakes are similar except that sampling occurs monthly during the fall and typically only once during the winter (depending on ice conditions). Number of sites: 11

North Temperate Lakes LTER: Physical Limnology of Primary Study Lakes 1981 - current

Abstract
Parameters characterizing the physical limnology of the eleven primary lakes (Allequash, Big Muskellunge, Crystal, Sparkling, Trout, bog lakes 27-02 [Crystal Bog] and 12-15 [Trout Bog], Mendota, Monona, Wingra and Fish) are measured at one station in the deepest part of each lake at 0.25-m to 1-m depth intervals depending on the lake. Measured parameters in the data set include water temperature, vertical penetration of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR; not measured on lakes Mendota, Monona, Wingra, and Fish), dissolved oxygen, as well as the derived parameter percent oxygen saturation. Sampling Frequency: fortnightly during ice-free season - every 6 weeks during ice-covered season for the northern lakes. Light (PAR) extinction coefficient is calculated by linearly regressing ln (FRLIGHT (z)) on depth z where the intercept is not constrained. FRLIGHT(z) = LIGHT(z) or DECK(z) where LIGHT(z) is light measured at depth z and DECK(z) is light measured on deck (above water) at the same time. For open water light profiles, the surface light measurement (depth z = 0) is excluded from the regression. For winter light profiles taken beneath the ice, the first light data are taken at the bottom of the ice cover and are included in the regression. The depth of uppermost light value is equal to the depth of the ice adjusted by the water level in the sample hole, i.e., the depth below the surface of the water. The water level can be at, above or below the surface of the ice. If the water level was not recorded, it is assumed to be 0.0 and the calculated light extinction coefficient is flagged. If ice thickness was not recorded, a light extinction coefficient is not calculated. For light data collected prior to March, 2007, light values less than 3.0 (micromolesPerMeterSquaredPerSec) are excluded. For light data collected starting in March 2007, light values less than 1.0 (micromolesPerMeterSquaredPerSec) are excluded. Except for bog lakes before August 1989, a light extinction coefficient is not calculated if there are less than three FRLIGHT values to be regressed. For bog lakes before August 1989, a light extinction coefficient is calculated if there are least two FRLIGHT values to be regressed. In these cases, the light extinction coefficient is flagged as non-standard. FRLIGHT values should be monotonically decreasing with depth. For light profiles where this is not true, a light extinction coefficient is not calculated. For samples for which light data at depth are present, but the corresponding deck light are missing, a light extinction coefficient is calculated by regressing ln (LIGHT (z)) on depth z. Note that if actual deck light had remained constant during the recording of the light profile, the resulting light extinction coefficient is the same as from regressing ln(FRLIGHT(z)). In these cases, the light extinction coefficient is flagged as non-standard. Oxygen and Temperature: We sample at the deepest part of the lake, taking a temperature and oxygen profile at meter intervals from the surface to within 1 meter of the bottom using a YSI Pro-ODO temporDO meter. We sample biweekly during open water and approximately every five weeks during ice cover. Protocol Log: Prior to 2011, we used a YSI Model 58 temporDO meter.

Abstract
These data are collected to document and characterize the submersed macrophytes of Trout Lake, to evaluate the long-term stability of this component, and to interface with investigations of other compartments of the ecosystem. Four sites along the shoreline of Trout Lake have been sampled annually in August along permanent line transects. These are quadrat-species level data. This dataset only contains information on species that were present. It includes a row for every species-quadrat present. If a quadrat is missing, that quadrat was either empty or was not sampled. The site descriptions specify a transect line along which presence or absence data is recorded for all macrophyte species. A 0.25 M2 ring placed at 1 meter intervals (except site 7 - 0.5 to 1 M depth where the ring is placed at 2 meter intervals) along the transect designates the sampling quadrat. Using SCUBA, species data are recorded along with the total number of quadrats encountered between the following depth intervals: 0.5-1 M, 1-2 M, 2-3 M and 3-5 M. These depth intervals have been permanently established with markers consisting of a commercial Earth Anchor set in the lake bottom with 2 floats secured to it near the bottom. Large boat bumpers are used on the anchors at 3 and 5 meters. Between 28 and 52 quadrats are examined within each depth interval at each site.
Pre-1987 Data. In 1987, permanent line transects were established at each of the sites. Biomass samples and line transects observed before 1987 were set by more general descriptions at the site and were not identical year to year.

Sites are designated according to the NTL numbering scheme established for the shoreline of the south basin of Trout Lake and its islands. The four sites (Trout-07, 46.01809769, -89.65571661; Trout-31, 46.0430698, -89.67157974; Trout-50, 46.01729465, -89.69461296; Trout-56, 46.01921135, -89.6813004) used by the macrophyte component are also used in the NTL fish and crayfish sampling. Five replicate quadrats (0.25 M2) are harvested for all above ground biomass at each site at each of three nominal depths: 1.5 M, 2.5 M and 4 M. Samples are removed along a line parallel to shore - located midway between sites for cover estimates. Four sites with 3 depths and 5 replicates yields 60 samples. In the lab, samples are separated by species and are dried and weighed. From 1989 to 2008 plants were placed in labeled paper bags oven dried, and weights recorded. Biomass weights were determined by weighing dried plants in paper bags and using an average tare for the bags. Consequently, values in the data base can be negative and should be considered as present in very small amounts.

Aquatic macrophytes are sampled from a boat at stations located at depths from 1 to 4 meters at 0.5-m intervals along transects perpendicular to the lake shoreline of the four primary study lakes in the Madison area (Lakes Mendota, Monona, and Wingra, and Fish Lake) from June to August. A weighted, double-headed garden rake is cast off the front left, front right, rear left, and rear right of the boat and then dragged approximately 2 meters across the bottom by means of an attached line. The total plant mass and the total filamentous algae mass in each tow is measured. To the maximum extent possible, water is squeezed from the plants to minimize the amount of water present in the final weight. Weights are recorded in the boat using field scales. Weights from the 4 rake casts at each station can be averaged to compute overall average weights for plant mass and for filamentous algae mass at the station.
Detailed Macrophyte Sampling description.
Using the site book and the depth measuring pole, move to the 1 meter depth mark and throw both anchors. From the Macrophyte Depth Table, find the distance to throw out the rake and the meter mark that the line should be drawn to. The table is calculated to determine the starting and ending meter marks to draw in the line to allow the rake to drag 2 meters on the lake bottom. Pull the rake quickly out of the water. If a significant amount of dirt has been brought up with the plants (i.e. the weight of the dirt will add significantly to the total weight), wash the plants. Depending on the volume of the plants, wash them either by keeping them in your hands and dunking them in the lake or by putting them in a bucket with drain holes. Separate the filamentous algae from the rest of the plant material. Squeeze out as much water as possible (it may be necessary to divide up the plant material into portions to effectively squeeze out the water). Weigh the plant material (minus the filamentous algae) and record the total weight. Weigh the filamentous algae and record the weight. Repeat the above steps until 4 rake tosses have been thrown. Move to the next half-meter depth. Macrophytes are collected at each half-meter water depth from 1 meter to 4 meters.

Aquatic macrophytes are sampled from a boat at stations located at depths from 1 to 4 meters at 0.5-m intervals along transects perpendicular to the lake shoreline of the four primary study lakes in the Madison area (Lakes Mendota, Monona, and Wingra, and Fish Lake) from June to August. For each rake cast, filamentous algae and any aquatic macrophyte species present are assigned a density rating from 0-5 based on the extent of coverage of the upper rake head. Determination of extent of coverage involves judgment of the surveyor as to the number of rake teeth and area of teeth covered by each species. It is necessary to separate plants to assess individual species coverage. Ratings from the 4 rake casts at each station can be averaged to compute an overall density rating for each species found at the station.

Before removing the plant material from the rake, drape the long strands over the rake and gently push the plant material down on the rake. Assign a rake rating (from 1 to 5) depending on how much the plant material covers the rake prongs. The rake prongs are painted in 20 percent increments. If the plant material only covers the lowest 20 percent of the rake prongs, assign the rake rating a 1. If the plant material covers between 20 percent and 40 percent of the rake prongs, the rake rating is a 2, and so on. If a significant amount of dirt has been brought up with the plants (i.e. the weight of the dirt will add significantly to the total weight), wash the plants. Separate the filamentous algae from the rest of the plant material. Separate and identify the individual plant species, throwing out any dead plant material. Give the filamentous algae and each plant species a rake rating (note that it is often necessary to visualize how much space each species would take up on the rake prongs rather than actually placing each species onto the rake). If a plant species can not be identified, take a sample back to the lab by putting it in a ziplock bag with a small amount of water and temporarily storing it in a cooler. Repeat the above steps until 4 rake tosses have been thrown. Normally 2 rake tosses are thrown out each side of the boat to an area where the water depth is known to be at the desired depth. Move to the next half-meter depth. Macrophytes are collected at each half-meter water depth from 1 meter to 4 meters.

North Temperate Lakes LTER Meteorological Data - Woodruff Airport 1989 - current

Abstract
Meteorological measurements are being gathered at a site at the Noble F. Lee municipal airport located at Woodruff, WI for three purposes: 1) to supplement the data from the raft on Sparkling and Trout Lakes used for evaporation calculations, and 2) to provide standard meteorological measurements for the North Temperate Lakes site, and 3) to measure radiation for primary production studies in the study lakes at the site. The following parameters are measured at 1-minute intervals: 1) air temperature at 1.5 m above ground, 2) relative humidity at 1.5 m above ground, 3) wind speed and direction and peak wind speed at 3 m above ground, 4) total long-wave radiation, 5) total short-wave radiation, 6) photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), 7) total solar radiation, and 8) total precipitation. High resolution data is taken typically at 10 minute intervals as well as 1-hour and 24-hour averages. Half-hourly averages of PAR and shortwave radiation are also stored. Precipitation data are summed for 5-minute intervals during periods of detectable precipitation. Derived data included in this data set include dew point temperature and vapor pressure as well as daily minimum and maximum values for some parameters. Data are automatically updated into the database every six hours. Sampling frequency: varies for instantaneous samples; averaged to hourly, half-hourly and daily values. Number of sites: 1. Date/time is Central Standard Time (GMT - 06:00) throughout the year.
