Column Definition Unit
sample_plot The sampling plots with different midge exclusion cages 18 in total. e = full exclusion cage m= partial exclusion cage (mock cage) c = control plot with no frame or mesh cage. The number represents the plot number. For example 1c represents the first plot which is a control plot. The following are all plots used in the experiment:1c 1e 1m 2c 2e 2m 3c 3e 3m 4c 4e 4m 5c 5e 5m 6c 6e and 6m.
exclusion_treatment The midge exclusion cage used in a particular sampling plot where e = full exclusion cage m= partial exclusion cage (mock cage) c = control plot with no frame or mesh cage.
rep replicate number
trap_setdate the date the infall trap was set or re-set at which point the trap started with zero midges
trap_collectdate the date the infall trap was emptied usually followed by being immediately re-set.
is_subsample whether or not an infall trap was subsampled when counted for the number of midges (by morphospecies). Based on the density of midges in an infall trap on a given collection date. Generally if there were hundreds to thousands of midges a subsample analysis was performed. y= yes a subsample was performed n= no a subsample was not performed.
tray_type The type of tray used in counting the midges. 3 types of trays were used: small large1 and large2. The areas are as follows: small = 731 square centimeters large1 = 1862.40 square centimeters large2 = 1247 square centimeters
sample_session the number of sampling sessions in a season as defined from trap set to collection. the first trap set date to the first trap collect date would have a sampling session = 1 the second trap set date to the second trap collect date would have a sampling session =2 and so forth.
subsamp_chiron if a subsample was performed the number of subsamples performed for the morphospecies chironomus
subsamp_tany if a subsample was performed the number of subsamples performed for the morphospecies Tanytarsus.
subsamp_simuliidae if a subsample was performed the number of subsamples peformed for arthropods only identified to the family level = Simuliidae
rawcount_chiron the number of Chironomus islandiucs counted in an infall trap. if a subsample was performed this is the total number of Chironomus counted from those subsamples.
rawcount_tany the number of Tanytarsus gracilentus counted in an infall trap. if a subsample was performed this is the total number of Tanytarsus counted from those subsamples.
rawcount_simuliidae the number of midges counted from an infall trap identified to the family level of Simuliidae. if a subsample was performed this is the total number of Simuliidae counted from those subsamples.
rawcount_others the number of arthropods not classified as Chironomus islandicus Tanytarsus gracilentus or Simullidae.
fracsub_chiron If a subsample was performed for Chironomus islandicus the fraction of the tray that was subsampled. Calculated as (subsamp_chiron * (ring area/ tray_type area)).
fracsub_tany If a subsample was performed for Tanytarsus gracilentus the fraction of the tray that was subsampled. Calculated as (subsamp_tany * (ring area/ tray_type area)).
fracsub_simuliidae If a sample was performed for midges identified only to the family level of Simuliidae the fraction of the tray that was subsampled. Calculated as (subsamp_simuliidae * (ring area/ tray_type area)).
count_chiron The total number of Chironomus islandicus in the tray accounting for subsampling. If subsampling was performed calculated as (rawcount_chiron/fracsub_chiron). dimensionless
count_tany The total number of Tanytarsus gracilentus in the tray accounting for subsampling. If subsampling was performed calculated as (rawcount_tany/fracsub_tany) dimensionless
count_simuliidae The total number of midges identified to the family level of Simuliidae in the tray accounting for subsampling. If subsampling was performed calculated as (rawcount_simuliidae/fracsub_simuliidae)
count_other The total number of other arthropods in the tray accounting for subsampling.

midgeflag if the sample of midges collected from an infall trap for a particular sampling session is suspect a data flag represented as f is assigned. Data flags are typically assigned for rubber band failures and if part or all of a sample was lost.
