Abstract

There are millions of lakes, ponds and reservoirs in the United States. Existing datasets are large and unweildy. With this data product, derived from the US NHD (downloaded Jan 2013), we summarize at a high level the distribution of lakes across the US.

Raster file where each grid cell contains the sum of the areas of all lakes (and portions of lakes) that fall in that grid cell.
Raster file where each grid cell contains the sum of the perimeters (length of all shorelines (lakes and rivers)) of all shorelines that fall in that grid cell.
Raster file where each grid cell contains the count of all lakes whose centroid falls in that grid cell.
