North Temperate Lakes LTER Yahara Lakes District Study Lakes

Abstract
The five NTL-LTER primary study lakes in the Madison Lakes Region include Fish Lake, Lake Mendota, Lake Monona, and Lake Wingra. This data set provides locations for these lakes, as well as attributes including the lake names, NTL-LTER lake identification codes, Water Body Identification Codes (WBICs), and other fields that may be used to reference individual lakes.

North Temperate Lakes LTER Northern Highland Lake District Wildland Urban Interface

Abstract
The Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) is the area where houses meet or intermingle with undeveloped wildland vegetation. This makes the WUI a focal area for human-environment conflicts such as wildland fires, habitat fragmentation, invasive species, and biodiversity decline. Using geographic information systems (GIS), we integrated U.S. Census and USGS National Land Cover Data, to map the Federal Register definition of WUI (Federal Register 66:751, 2001). These data are useful within a GIS for mapping and analysis at national, state, and local levels.

Abstract
Land use/land cover was interpreted from historical aerial photographs for riparian buffer zones surrounding 50 lakes in Vilas County, Wisconsin. Photography from the 1930s, 1960s, and 1990s were interpreted, resulting in land use/land cover data for three time periods. Mapping changes in land use/land cover in the riparian buffer zones surrounding lakes in Vilas County, Wisconsin Note: Where riparian zones of two lakes overlap, polygons representing both lakes&#39; buffers are present. Thus, while the area measurements for individual lakes are correct, they cannot be used for calculations over the entire study area because overlap areas will be counted twice.
