Spatial Data

Spatial data at NTL-LTER can be accessed in several different ways. This page provides a catalog of individual data sets that can be downloaded for use in a geographic information system (GIS).

Vector data sets are provided as compressed shapefiles, which can be used in a variety of GIS environments. The Wisconsin Transverse Mercator 83/91 coordinate system is used for all vector data.

Satellite imagery, aerial photography,and other raster-format data sets can be accessed from WisconsinView. For more information, contact: spatial@lter.limnology.wisc.edu.

External Spatial Data Resources

UW-Madison Department of Geography's Robinson Map Library is an absolutely fantastic source for spatial data. Their internal collection includes data from nearly every county in the state of Wisconsin, while their list of links to external resources (state and federal agencies, and international data sources) is superb.

WisconsinView is the best first stop for aerial and satellite imagery covering the state of Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has many spatial datasets, including administrative boundaries, elevation, land cover, hydrography, and much more. This is usually the first stop for finding Wisconsin GIS datasets.

Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection has a handful of datasets available to the public, including livestock siting, well locations, and drainage districts, among others.

Wisconsin Legislative Technology Bureau has datasets concerned with legistative districts (from local wards up to congressional districts).

Wisconsin Geographic Information Office has an excellent collection of various boundary layers (counties, municipalities, school districts, etc) for the entire state of Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Department of Transportation is the best source of road data (centerlines, traffic volume, aerial imagery, survey points, and more) in the state. Of special interest is their statewide local roads layer, WISLR.

Wisconsin Geologic and Natural History Survey is the best source for geologic (bedrock) and groundwater data in the state of Wisconsin.

Michican Center for Geographic Information is the best source for Michigan spatial data. The upper penninsula of Michican is adjacent to the Northern Highland Lake District studied by NTL LTER researchers.
