Geochemical models of the evolution of waters have been employed to elucidate the solute evolution of waters dominated by carbonate and gypsum with considerable success. Plummer and his co-workers have developed and utilized mass balance and reaction-path models in a variety of carbonate aquifer systems where reacting mineral phase compositions are relatively limited. Similar investigations of silicate-dominated aquifers, however, are more complex and less common.
