Human Activity in North Temperate Lakes Primary Study Lakes Area

Abstract:

Understanding the effect that human activity and the resulting social and economic forces have on lake ecology is of great importance. The following six tabular data sets are associated with human activity in the North Temperate Lakes Primary Study Lakes area. Core dataset-1) A survey of lakeshore residents of Northern Wisconsin was taken in 2005 regarding activities, values and expectations about lakes. Summary results are presented here. Associated dataset-1) A survey regarding manure managment was taken on Dane County, WI farms within the Lake Mendota watershed in 2003 and 2004. The results of the survey "Manure Management on the Urban Fringe" are presented here. Reference dataset-1) Property tax records for all parcels of property in Vilas County have been collected. These records serve the register of deeds, the department of taxation, and other county departments, as well as private citizens or businesses, such as realtors, who seek information on properties in the county. Reference dataset-2) Lake District revenues record one of the primary means of action available to lake districts. These districts are by statute granted the authority to levy property taxes, special assessments, special charges and delinquent charges against property owners within their geographic boundaries. Reference dataset-3) One of the dominant uses of the Madison area lakes is for boating. The LTER project has obtained records of boat traffic that passes through the locks at the head of the Yahara River on its stretch between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona. Reference dataset-4) Sales records of residential shoreline property parcels in Vilas County, WI, USA for the period January 1997 through Dec 2004 have been obtained. This dataset includes sales of over 2000 parcels on 234 lakes.

The remaining data sets are spatial data sets. Vector data sets are provided as compressed shapefiles, which can be used in a variety of geographic information system (GIS) environments. The Wisconsin Transverse Mercator 83/91 coordinate system is used for all vector data.
